„Ciemność i światło to dla mnie dwie strony tej samej monety”
Kosheen to brytyjski zespół, który podbił świat muzyki elektronicznej na początku XXI wieku. W 2001 roku trio z Bristolu wydało kultowy, debiutancki album pt. „Resist”. Takie hity jak „Catch”, „Hungry” czy „Hide U” wywindowało Kosheen na szczyty list przebojów, a „Resist” okrył się platyną. Eksperymenty muzyczne, łączenie brzmień m.in. DnB z trip hopem oraz magicznym głosem i charyzmą wokalistki Sian Evans okazało się przepisem na sukces. To było prawie ćwierć wieku temu, a w międzyczasie zespół wydał jeszcze 4 płyty i zapadł się pod ziemię. Na szczęście kilka lat temu wrócili do koncertowania, a w zeszłym roku rozpoczęli trasę z okazji 25-lecia działalności zespołu, dzięki czemu odwiedzili również Polskę. W tym roku ponownie odwiedzili nasz kraj i to aż w trzech miastach – w ostatni weekend zagrali w Warszawie, Wrocławiu i Krakowie. Dzięki temu mieliśmy okazję chwilę porozmawiać z czarującą Sian Evans. Artystka opowiedziała nam m.in. o pracy nad debiutanckim albumem, wrażeniach z trasy czy pracą nad nowym materiałem.
„Resist” jest bardzo zróżnicowane muzycznie – mamy tu trip-hop, DnB, nie brakuje też gitary akustycznej. Czy mieliście konkretny plan, jak ten album ma brzmieć, czy był to proces organiczny? Co było dla Was inspiracją podczas tworzenia albumu w tamtym czasie?
Rozwijaliśmy się w erze, w której granice muzyczne były przekraczane, testowane i redefiniowane. Mieliśmy ten luksus, że mogliśmy eksplorować wpływy, z którymi dorastaliśmy i wykorzystywać technologię, która się wyłaniała. Sprawiliśmy ból głowy wytwórniom płytowym, gdy próbowały go sprzedać, ale dzięki nowo narodzonemu internetowi i mediom społecznościowym ludzie znaleźli naszą muzykę i natychmiast się z nią utożsamili. Byliśmy trzema bardzo różnymi osobami z, jak się wydawało, różnych światów, więc eksperymentowaliśmy z tym, co mogło powstać z naszej chemii.
Pomimo muzycznego zróżnicowania, płyta jest bardzo spójna, zwłaszcza pod względem tekstów. Jest tu wiele mrocznych momentów. Czy ten album wiernie odzwierciedla Wasz charakter?
We wczesnych dniach było w nas dużo miłości i czułam się wspierana w eksplorowaniu wszystkich aspektów mojej osobowości w moich tekstach. Prowadziłam bardzo ciekawe życie i czerpię z moich doświadczeń oraz z obserwacji moich bliskich przyjaciół, aby wyrazić to, co mam nadzieję jest uniwersalnym bankiem emocji, z którego można korzystać, kiedy tylko jest to potrzebne.
Co było źródłem tej mrocznej strony w Twoich ówczesnych tekstach?
Ciemność i światło to dla mnie dwie strony tej samej monety. Jestem artystką i lubię bawić się tymi kolorami. Jeśli melodia jest jasna, tekst może być głęboki i na odwrót. Jestem kobietą, a my jesteśmy z natury mroczne i głębokie – trzymamy tajemnicę życia w naszych brzuchach, a nie ma nic bardziej mrocznego niż to.
Po tylu latach, wspomnienia sprzed 25 lat musiały powrócić. Kiedy myślicie o „Resist”, co jako pierwsze przychodzi Wam do głowy?
To było hiperboliczne (przesadzone, intensywne). Byliśmy stale w trasie. To było niesamowite – występować na całym świecie. Jednak tęskniłam za moim synem, który był mały, miał 10 lat, a jako samotnej matce było to trudne dla nas obojga. Nie uwzględniono faktu, że jestem mamą, a on zmagał się z moją nieobecnością. Oboje przetrwaliśmy, a moje późniejsze płyty odzwierciedlają, jak przetwarzaliśmy ten czas.
„Influencer” to obecnie bardzo modne słowo. Czy czujecie się również influencerami? Dzięki Wam świat lepiej poznał DnB, który wtedy był jeszcze gatunkiem undergroundowym.
Czuję, że byliśmy częścią ruchu, który trwa do dziś. Wprowadzaliśmy muzykę z sypialni i domowych studiów na świat. Zbiorowo wyrzuciliśmy przez okno kulturę wytwórni płytowych i przejęliśmy własność nad naszą kulturą muzyczną i głosem. Jestem z tego dumna.
I znowu koncertujecie w Polsce…
Uwielbiam to. Odkrywanie nowych miast i ludzi. Teraz pierwotni fani Kosheen, którzy puszczali tę muzykę swoim dzieciom, przyprowadzają swoje wnuki i dzieci! To jest piękne.
Byłem na koncercie w Gdańsku w zeszłym roku. Pomimo pełnej sali, stworzyliście bardzo intymną atmosferę, która zrobiła na mnie ogromne wrażenie. Czasem miałem uczucie, że gracie tylko dla mnie. W jednej chwili można tańczyć, a w następnej płakać. Niesamowita charyzma sceniczna. Czy macie tego typu połączenie z publicznością na całym świecie?
Wierzę, że każdy, kto zada sobie trud, aby kupić bilet i przyjść na mój koncert, powinien mieć najlepszy wieczór. Chcę, żeby ludzie czuli się związani z muzyką i ze sobą nawzajem. Chcę, żeby wiedzieli, że jestem im bardzo wdzięczna za to, że tam są i pozwalają mi mieć to wspaniałe życie. Każda piosenka opowiada dla mnie historię, więc przeżywam ją za każdym razem, gdy ją śpiewam. Mam nadzieję, że publiczność odnajduje swoją historię i przeżywa ten moment na nowo w przestrzeni, którą staramy się stworzyć.
Chciałem też zapytać o inspiracje modowe. Czy sama projektujesz ubrania na występy?
Nie, lubię znajdować dziwne i wspaniałe sukienki, które zazwyczaj są z drugiej ręki. Na świecie jest zbyt wiele kupowania i marnotrawstwa.
Zatem, kiedy wychodzi nowy album?
W tej chwili w studiu dzieją się ekscytujące rzeczy. Pisałam teksty z wieloma wspaniałymi producentami przez wiele lat, ale kluczowe jest to, aby ta płyta odzwierciedlała to, co Kosheen zbudował i co Kosheen znaczy dla naszej publiczności.
Co byś powiedziała dzisiaj sobie te 25 lat temu, tuż przed premierą „Resist”?

„Darkness and light are two sides of the same coin for me”
Kosheen is a British band that conquered the world of electronic music at the beginning of the 21st century. In 2001, the trio from Bristol released their iconic debut album, „Resist”. Hits such as „Catch,” „Hungry,” and „Hide U” propelled Kosheen to the top of the charts, and „Resist” went platinum. Musical experimentation—combining sounds like DnB with trip hop—along with the magical voice and charisma of vocalist Sian Evans proved to be a recipe for success. That was almost a quarter of a century ago, and in the meantime, the band released four more albums and seemed to disappear. Fortunately, they returned to touring a few years ago, and last year they began a tour celebrating the 25th anniversary of the band’s activity, which brought them to Poland. This year, they visited our country again, in as many as three cities—this past weekend, they played in Warsaw, Wrocław, and Krakow. Thanks to this, we had the opportunity to talk briefly with the charming Sian Evans. The artist told us, among other things, about working on the debut album, her impressions from the tour, and the work on new material.
“Resist” is musically very diverse – we have trip-hop, DnB, and no shortage of acoustic guitar. Did you have a specific plan for how this album should sound, or was it an organic process? What were your inspirations when creating the album at that time?
We were developing in an era where musical boundaries were being pushed tested and redefined. We had the luxury of being able to explore the influences we had grown up in and use the technology that was emerging. We gave record labels a headache when they tried to market it but with the new born internet and social media people found our music and related immediately . We were 3 very different people from different worlds it seemed so we were experimenting with what could be made from our chemistry.
Despite the musical diversity, the album is very coherent, especially in terms of the lyrical content. There are many dark moments here. Does this album accurately reflect your character?
There was a lot of love in the early days and I felt supported to explore all aspects of my personality within my songwriting . I have had a very interesting life and draw from my experiences and the observation of my close friends to express what I hope to be a universal bank of emotions to be dipped into whenever needed.
What was the source of that dark side in your lyrics back then?
Darkness and light to me are two sides of the same coin. I am an artist and I like to play with these colours. If the melody is bright the lyrics can been deep and vice versa. I am a woman and we are naturally dark and deep we hold the secret to life in our bellies there is nowhere darker than that.
After so many years, memories from 25 years ago must have come flooding back. When you think „Resist,” what is the first thing that comes to your mind?
It was hyperbolic. We were on the road constantly . It was amazing to be performing all over the world. However I missed my son who was small 10 years old and as a single parent it was tough for both of us. No accommodation was made for me being a mum and he struggled without me We both survived and my later records reflect how we processed this time.
„Influencer” is a very trendy word now. Do you feel like you are influencers, too? Thanks to you, the world got to know DnB better, which was still an underground genre back then.
I feel like we were part of a movement which continues to this day. Bringing music from bedrooms and home studios to the world . Collectively we blew the record label culture out the window and took ownership of our music culture and voice. I’m proud of this.

I love it. Discovering new cities and people. Now the original Kosheen fans who played music to their children bring their grandchildren and their children! It’s beautiful.
I was at the concert in Gdańsk last year. Despite the full venue, you achieved a very intimate atmosphere that made a huge impression on me. Sometimes I felt like you were playing just for me. One moment you can dance, and the next you can cry. Incredible stage charisma. Do you have this kind of connection with the audience everywhere in the world?
I believe that everyone who makes the effort to buy a ticket and attend my shows should have the best night. I want them to feel connected to the music and each other. I want them to know that I am so grateful for them being there and allowing me to have this wonderful life. Every song tells a story for me so I live it each time I sing it. I hope that the audiences find their story and re live that moment in the space we hope to create.
I also wanted to ask you about your fashion inspirations. Do you design the clothes for your performances yourself?
No, I like to find odd and wonderful dresses that are usually second hand. There is too much buying and waste in the world.
So, when is the new album coming out?
Exciting things are happening in the studio at the moment. I’ve written with lots of wonderful producers for many years, but it is vital that this record is representative of what Kosheen has built and what Kosheen means to our audience.
What would you say to your 25-years-younger self today, just before the release of „Resist”?
Don’t sign that publishing deal! Lol.
